From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An encyclopedia (also spelled encyclopaedia or encyclopædia) is a comprehensive written compendium holding information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. Encyclopedias are divided into articles with one article on each subject covered. The articles on subjects in an encyclopedia are usually accessed alphabetically by article name and can be contained in one volume or many volumes, depending on the amount of material included. Indeed, the purpose of an encyclopedia is to collect knowledge disseminated around the globe; to set forth its general system to the men with whom we live, and transmit it to those who will come after us, so that the work of preceding centuries will not become useless to the centuries to come; and so that our offspring, becoming better instructed, will at the same time become more virtuous and happy, and that we should not die without having rendered a service to the human race in the future years to come. — Diderot OverviewFrom Wikipedia under the

Q. I don't trust Wikipedia and Britannica just turned to a pay encyclopedia. I'm not looking for a dictionary, I'm looking for an encyclopedia. The encyclopedia should have good citations as well. Asked by Dark Icarus - Tue Dec 8 22:20:05 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Regardless of what people may say, Wikipedia.org is a reliable online encyclopedia. They have citations on their infomation at the bottom of the page. If sources are not sited a message will appear at the top of the page. Remember that Wikipedia gets their info from books and internet sources just like one would if they are writing a paper. You probably shouldn't site Wikipedia as your souce because teachers are prejudic against it. You can also go to the site where the info was taken from at the links at the bottom of the page. Answered by Elena - Tue Dec 8 22:33:28 2009 Where can you get a Columbia Encyclopedia Sixth Edition or fifth edition?
Q. I need a Columbia Encyclopedia Sixth Edition or fifth edtion. Do you know any stores in NY that have one? I checked Barnes and Noble, Borders and other places. Also, I checked on Amazon. I could get it from there but that would take time, so a store would be neat. Please respond! It would help alot! Thanks!! Asked by Rabea - Mon Oct 12 18:03:50 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, I've got a fifth edition, which I bought in a "used and rare" bookstore in Chicago. I think your best bet would be a good second-hand bookstore in New York. Try the Strand (see below). If they can't help, they may know someone who can. Answered by Lili - Mon Oct 12 18:13:44 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "encyclopedia" Are they taking the Mick?
