A twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. Originally proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism, the Twelve Steps were first published in the book, Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism in 1939. The method was then adapted and became the foundation of other twelve-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Co-Dependents Anonymous and Debtors Anonymous. As summarized by the American Psychological Association, the process involves the following:

  • admitting that one cannot control one's addiction or compulsion;
  • recognizing a greater power that can give strength;
  • examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member);
  • making amends for these errors;
  • learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior;
  • helping others that suffer from the same addictions or compulsions.

how could an atheist do the twelve step program if they dont believe in a greater power?
Q. If the twelve steps (In AA & NA) works then how could an atheist get past the second step by believing in a greater power than themselves "God" as one would see it as. This would be very difficult if not impossible for a true atheist who would not believe in any supernatural thing? How could this second step be explained to me without having to have faith in any god or power? Who would I be prayer for if really I dont believe in any supernatural? This would mean id need to change my beliefs to be free?

A. The idea that you can have a concept of a "Higher Power" that is different from the God of AA is known as a "bait and switch": AA is full of them; they attempt to concel the true nature of the program in order to attract new members. I attempted to work AA as an atheist, once I accepted powerlessness and didn't have a Higher Power to rescue me in Step Two, I was screwed. My options at that point were convert, go back to drinking, or commit suicide. Some people are able to do some sort of mental gymnastics that allows them to believe in a Higher Power that listens to prayer and answers it without calling that power God, but I think they're fooling themselves because they can't accept the options I listed above. Who says a person… [cont.]

A. There is a very good 12-step program called Emotions Anonymous. Check the webpage and find a group near you. Yes, this will work for what you are calling laziness or shyness. There is nothing in the world like group support. Good luck!
