A twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. Originally proposed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a method of recovery from alcoholism, the Twelve Steps were first published in the book, Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism in 1939. The method was then adapted and became the foundation of other twelve-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous, Co-Dependents Anonymous and Debtors Anonymous. The idea that you can have a concept of a "Higher Power" that is different from the God of AA is known as a "bait and switch": AA is full of them; they attempt to concel the true nature of the program in order to attract new members. I attempted to work AA as an atheist, once I accepted powerlessness and didn't have a Higher Power to rescue me in Step Two, I was screwed. My options at that point were convert, go back to drinking, or commit suicide. Some people are able to do some sort of mental gymnastics that allows them to believe in a Higher Power that listens to prayer and answers it without calling that power God, but I think they're fooling themselves because they can't accept the options I listed above.
